2nd day of editing

2nd Day of Editing

Today was our second day of editing which I found was much more productive than the last. we complete more and we were also able to post a rough cut of the music video. The things we found hard were the lip syncing and getting it on point. Although, we struggled but we were able to ask the teacher to assist us and she told us how we could improve with our lip-syncing. In addition, we also found that the footage was less than we thought so we need to go out and film some more for out music video.

Animatic

ANIMATIC

This is me and dorcas' animatic video where we have used several types of presentations to present our work. Dorcas used 'Pixton' a website for comics and storyboards to then create a story board using our shot list and location sheet to help along the way. I then went ahead and used 'Filpagram' to make the images move systematically and also to add music in the background, and playing in the background is 'Tori kelly- Unbreakable smile' which is the song we choose for our music video.  Lastly, I then posted the video on youtube so I could then embed it into my blog which is as seen above. These technique really tested our abilities and w accomplished and learnt a lot using these tools of media.

We filmed Nadine with some close ups and other angles such as ¾ angle. This indeed placed a lot of detailed angles within our video.

In this shot we had Nadine standing in front of a statue with red buses driving past behind her. This makes it obvious for the viewers that we were in London.

With this shot we gave Nadine a prop which was the acoustic guitar which belongs to Dorcas.

We filmed Nadine being herself and running around the sun beds, doing star jump and just having fun! This was ideal for placing within our music video.

We did not plan to film this scene but we decided that it would be a great shot within our music video.

Here we used as variety of shots to film these scenes for our and this created a good look for our film and we filmed nice shots.

Here we filmed in the drama studio using lots of props such as bubble and balloons and musical instruments.

Song Lyrics

Tori Kelly - Unbreakable Smile

La da da da dee, you’re not breaking me
La de da da da da da da da, yeah

Somebody told me fame is a disease
You start singing the blues when you start seeing the green
But I think it's all about what you choose
The way you live your life, depends on you
That’s when I realized I wanna make a difference
Change other people’s lives, give hope, even for a moment
Use my name for good and change the game I could
Because to make it you think I gotta act a certain way,
Be a little bit insane, live a little, it's okay
I guess we have different definitions of living, but you’ll twist my words anyway
You’ll say that I’m naïve, like I don’t have a past,
You're the one being deceived, I see right behind the mask
Tryna to stir me up and get me mad
I smile because happiness is all I have, so

La da da da dee, you’re not breaking me
La de da da da, ain’t got time for ya, singing
La da da da dee, you won’t shatter me
La de da da da, got an unbreakable smile

You see me hanging with my fam, but that don’t mean I’m living in a bubble
You’ll find me at church, but that don’t mean I can’t cause trouble
Stir up a little scene 'cause isn't that what you want?
For me to mess up, so you can dress up some story
Saying, Tori this’ll sell more records
But I’d rather make ’em yawn than be a pawn on your chessboard
So call me boring, call me cookie cutter
Call me what you want
A matter of fact
Just say it loud and don’t st-stutter
'Cause I know who I am, yeah I’m still the same
Just a California girl with big dreams
Thinking maybe they’ll let me sing songs about real things
And baby who knows maybe I can sell out shows without taking off my clothes
God made me sexy I don't care if only I know

La da da da dee, you’re not breaking me
La de da da da, ain’t got time for ya, singing
La da da da dee, you won’t shatter me
La de da da da, got an unbreakable smile

Oh oh [2x]

And I'll just keep on singing.

La da da da dee, you’re not breaking me
La de da da da, ain’t got time for ya
La da da da dee, you won’t shatter me
La de da da da, got an unbreakable smile

I might be smiling, yes
But don't mistake kindness for weakness

choosing the track

Here me and dorcas have been looking at some up and coming artist who we could chose the track for our music video. We went through each song and research on the person who was singing in the song. this helped u then realise that some of the singers were much more experienced then some and their name was much more well known, this is why we decided to chose Tori Kelly.

2nd day of Filming

2nd day of Filming
For our second day of filming, we went to camden town and filmed a lot of cut away shots and other fantastic shots for our music video. We did this so that we could have lots more footage to work with rather than not having enough. Me and dorcas as a team chose this location because it had the urban feel that we was looking for to put in our music video, and it was lively and filled with people that wanted to contribute to our music video. It was great also that we went with some of the other girls in our case because ideas were flowing and we filmed a lot more footage than our first day of filming.

Alex Southam - Case Study 3

Alex Southam

To begin with Southam undertook all the tasks on his videos; camera, lighting, editing, now uses a director for photography. Southam says that he likes the format of music videos as , 'you can try new techniques and can have real artistic freedom'. He is less keen on commercials as they allow for 'much less freedom'. He also uses vimeo to showcase his videos- this is becoming as increasingly important platform as it is considered have 'higher status' than youtube.

Southam's first video was Alt-J - Tessellate with a budget of £10,000. Southam learnt how to use after effects and edit his own video.

Case Study- Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves began making short experimental films whilst at university and studying illustration. He worked with a production company called factory films and he began shooting at very small budgets with music videos which cost around £5,000 each. His graduation films 'Scratch'(1991) and 'The Take-out' (1993). Both of his films won numerous awards at the short film festivals worldwide.

Making his breakthrough video for Radiohead  for their song "Just" where a man played by Dorian Lough is lying on the pavement and is confronted by an angry crowd, this video garnered Thraves a lot of attention for its strong narrative structure and use of subtitles, what the man says to make the crowd lie down at the end of the video still manages to cause great discussion amongst fans some fifteen years later.

Sam Smith 'money on my mind' is one of Jamie Thraves most recent videos done for Sam Smith an up and coming artist, who has recently won a grammy. Thraves has come a long way from his previous music videos he has come up with new and improved ideas to up his game in the music video industry.

This is also one of 'Japanese Popstars' - Song for Lisa. This is one of the other, this film cost around £200,000 to film within 2 days it was complete.

Editing to the Beat

Editing to the beat

To evaluate, Here I have completed my editing to the beat task using premiere pro to edit. I have practised my editing skills by cutting the video footage every time there is a break in the music which also adds quick editing to the video so that the audience are constantly watching something different and interesting. I also learnt how to do a split screen using more the one scene of footage for my video, this helped because i can then use this editing technique for my final piece.
This is the final edit for my editing to the beat video as you can see some of the videos overlap an the other, this is a form of editing my video using premiere pro.

Styles of Music

Styles of Music

In this post I will be talking about the different styles of music and how they fit in with the genres I have described.

Narrative based

A song with a narrative based music video the song includes a narrative story of the lyrics/ words being acted out in some way. This is a Narrative based music video because it tells a story and it is very interesting to watch.

 Performance Based

A performance based video focuses on showing footage of the artist or band either in a casual environment, i.e. socialising with friends, or performing, live performance or staged performance.

Parody

  1. A parody  in contemporary usage, is a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation.

Abstract

An abstract music video is one which has no connection to the song playing in the background. Absolute music (sometimes abstract music) is music that is not explicitly "about" anything; in contrast to program music, it is non-representational.
